The Goldex complex is the easternmost part of the chain of operations and properties that Agnico Eagle owns in the Abitibi region of northwestern Quebec and northern Ontario. The complex includes the underground Goldex gold mine and the Akasaba West gold-copper, open-pit mine located less than 30 km from Goldex, as well as mineral processing facilities.

Underground mining began at Goldex in 2013 from the M and E satellite zones, and continues today from the South Zone and Deep 1 Zone, and initial production began in June 2024 from Deep 2 Zone, which starts below the Deep 1 Zone at 1,200 metres below surface.

Most of the ore mined at Goldex is processed through a gravity circuit that recovers about two-thirds of the gold, which is then smelted on site to form doré bars. Flotation recovers the rest of the gold, producing a gold-bearing pyrite concentrate, which is then trucked to the LaRonde complex for processing and smelting.

The Akasaba West gold-copper deposit was acquired in 2014. Commercial production was achieved in the first quarter of 2024, and the mine is set to produce approximately 115,000 ounces of gold and 21,000 tonnes of copper over a five-year mine life. This additional source of ore adds operational flexibility to the Goldex complex.

Highlights

  • Based on a 2006 agreement with the Government of Québec, the tailings from the Goldex mill – which are not acid-generating and have good neutralization potential – are disposed 24 km away at the Manitou site, a tailing site formerly used by an unrelated third party and abandoned to the Quebec government. The covering of the Manitou site by Goldex tailings is helping to rehabilitate the Manitou site, which has had past issues relating to acid drainage. At the same time, land use has been optimized, by avoiding the creation of a new tailings storage site for Goldex.
  • An innovative conveyor-like electric and automated system – Rail-Veyor® – is used at the Goldex underground mine to transport ore between the lowermost level of the Deep 1 Zone (1,200 metres below surface) and the current ore handling facilities at 760 metres below surface. This reduces the use of trucks underground, therefore reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions (approximately 4,300 tonnes per year) as well as health and safety risks.
  • Goldex was recognized for its 2023 health and safety performance by receiving the John T. Ryan National award from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (awarded to a metal mine which experienced the lowest reportable injury frequency in the previous year) and the F.J. O'Connell award for underground operations from the Quebec Mining Association (recognizing the workplace health and safety performance of QMA members).
